Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)

We are committed to promoting WASH practices and enhancing access to safe water and sanitation facilities, thereby improving health outcomes and fostering resilient communities living in healthy environments.

Unsafe drinking water remains a primary cause of malnutrition and mortality among children under five (5) years, underscoring the urgent need for safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices. Clean water not only reduces waterborne diseases but also enhances school and work attendance, enabling families to lead healthier and more productive lives.

Through collaborative efforts and community empowerment, we work towards creating lasting positive impacts on public health and well-being.

We Care CBO - Water and Sanitation

Our Approach

At We Care CBO, our WASH initiatives focus on three key areas:

1. WASH Infrastructure:
We prioritize the construction and renovation of permanent WASH facilities, including hand-washing stations, toilets and related infrastructure in schools, communities and health facilities. To ensure sustainability, we train community members on soap-making and the maintenance of WASH facilities.

Furthermore, we enhance access to clean water for households and livestock by promoting rainwater harvesting technologies, drilling boreholes and rehabilitating water pans and shallow wells, thereby adapting to climate change.

2. WASH Education:
Collaborating with Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) and other stakeholders, we promote behavioral change and social norms regarding hygiene practices to eradicate open defecation and improve drinking water safety.

We support the implementation of community-led total sanitation, establish health clubs and train students and teachers to become WASH champions in their schools and communities. Empowering communities with knowledge on good hygiene practices reduces the prevalence of diseases such as diarrhea and cholera.

3. Water Quality Awareness Creation:
We collaborate with communities, schools and government entities to monitor water quality and develop response plans as needed. Our training programs extend to teachers, community leaders and support staff to ensure the functionality of WASH infrastructure and timely chlorination and tank cleaning activities.

By monitoring water quality and promoting hygiene practices, we strive to ensure that community members have sustained access to safe water for drinking and hand washing.
