Gender Equity & Women Engagement

We are committed to promoting gender equity and empowering women and girls, ensuring they have equal opportunities to thrive and contribute to their communities’ growth and well-being.

At We Care CBO, we recognize the pivotal role that women play in society, holding the key to its growth and development. However, women often face pervasive challenges such as poverty, disenfranchisement and violence, compounded by systemic barriers that hinder their economic and social progress. These obstacles, experienced from a young age, can limit their participation and leadership opportunities later in life.

Core Challenges:

  • Poverty and limited access to opportunities
  • Health and nutrition disparities
  • Lack of knowledge and access to rights
  • Gender-based violence
  • Exclusion from decision-making processes
  • Discriminatory norms and gender dynamics

Our Approach

Our efforts in gender equity and women’s engagement are focused on three core areas:

1. Empowering the Girl Child:
Through our Girl Child Empowerment Program, we aim to increase access to basic education for girls and ensure their retention in school. Education not only provides girls with equal opportunities but also reduces child marriages, infant and maternal mortality rates, enabling them to become active citizens in society.

2. Distribution of Sanitary Pads to School Girls:
Managing menstruation can pose significant challenges for girls, particularly in low-income settings. To address this, we distribute sanitary pads to girls in primary and secondary schools, reducing school absenteeism and promoting menstrual hygiene management, thus enhancing academic performance.

3. Mentorship and Safe Spaces:
We provide mentorship programs to help girls discover their rights and leadership capabilities, fostering confidence and advocacy skills. Safe spaces serve as hubs for girls and women to connect, learn about sexual and reproductive health, access resources and receive mentorship in a supportive environment.

Additionally, our Sports for Development project engages youth in team-based sports, teaching teamwork, leadership and equality. Workshops on sexual and reproductive health, WASH and gender parity complement sports programming, inviting youth to participate in holistic development opportunities.

4. Economic and Social Empowerment:
We offer training in numeracy, business and vocational skills to women, establishing women-led savings groups and businesses and providing education on rights, decision-making and health. Engaging male leaders and community members on women’s economic and social rights further promotes gender equality and participation.
